West Midlands Group
Our local Vermin Championships is a fantastic, fun, community event. It reaches out to everyone in the community and has follow on benefits into our towns. The following morning after the shoot, the West Midlands Group hosts a BBQ breakfast. During the breakfast participants can catch up which is great for their morale. The most exciting part is when we count the number of vermin shot by each team. The vermin are weighted by points with feral cats being awarded the highest number of points. The team with the most points wins the prestigious Vermin Championship trophy for the year!
The funding raised through the event for the Regional Men’s Health Initiative benefits all rural people. Less foxes, feral pigs and cats and rabbits means farmers can improve their livestock numbers as well as take steps towards the protection of native fauna and flora.
Would you recommend other individuals, groups and organisations get involved?
Yes, I would strongly encourage other individuals and groups to get involved, as it requires a coordinated approach by all. The more teams involved the better! Plus, it builds upon our West Midlands Group profile. Hosting the event in February/March, is a great time, as its usually a quieter time for farmers, which means more people can be involved. Plus, on top of all of that, we can raise funding for a vital service for our community!
